In February 2019, the regional workshop titled “Gender Statistics in the Pacific: Establishing a Roadmap for better production and use of gender statistics to monitor the SDGs in the Pacific” took place in Denarau, Fiji, and brought together gender statistics focal points from national statistics offices (including two Government Statisticians), national gender offices, CSOs and development partners(including UN Women, SPC, ESCAP’s Office for the Pacific, UNFPA and ADB). During the workshop, participants discussed SDG localization processes with a gender lens, assessed gender-related SDG data gaps, and identified challenges and opportunities to fill such gaps.

This initiative built on a large body of existing work on this field in the region, including the statistical work for reporting on the 2012 Pacific Leaders Gender Equality Declaration and associated Pacific Women Shaping Pacific Development country and regional work plans, National Minimum Development Indicators, and national processes to localize the Sustainable Development Goals. As a result, a Roadmap was crafted, with the aim of enhancing the production, dissemination and use of gender statistics in Pacific Island Countries. UN Women and SPC are jointly organizing a validation workshop that will bring together all actors again, to review the final draft of the Roadmap, ready it for the endorsement process, and design strategies for in-country implementation. The workshop will be preceded by a one-day meeting of the Task Team, which will be used to fully finalize the Roadmap draft.
