The Economic and Social Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Pacific Island Economies

The ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic around the world has necessitated the Statistics Development Division (SDD) of the Pacific Community (SPC) to explore it’s impact on the Pacific Island economies.

Given the uncertainty on the speed and extent of COVID-19, SDD had briefly assessed it’s economic and social impacts on the Pacific Island economies through providing a risk matrix on various key indicators.

The range of indicators include the impact of COVID-19 on the Pacific Island Economies real GDP, remittances and tourism earnings, trade and production, domestic demand, employment, government fiscal and debt positions, poverty and health. The current indicators at hand indicates that the Pacific Island economies are moving towards recession and this requires immediate recovery planning to bring back jobs, economic activity, and growth.
