About Mike

Following a study break, Mike Sharp rejoined SPC in 2024 in a welfare economics and poverty statistics capacity. He first joined SPC in 2011 as a Fisheries Economist, then had various roles with the Statistics for Development Division from 2014 to 2023 entailing the provision of technical support to Pacific Island countries and territories in the conduct of household surveys, with particular focus on household income and expenditure surveys (HIES), food and consumption statistics. He managed various statistics development projects, engaged actively with international partners and regional statistics governance bodies, and led research in poverty and food consumption statistics.

Mike’s various roles at SPC have all included elements of capacity strengthening and transfer to Pacific counterparts across population, economic and social statistics, and with gender, cultural and environmental dimensions. Prior to SPC, Mike worked in rural livelihood development in Vanuatu and Guyana, and in the Australian private sector. Mike has a Master of Economics and a Bachelor of Agricultural Economics.
