About Peter
Peter Ellis is Director of the Statistics for Development Division where his team of statisticians, data scientists and analysts help Pacific statistical offices collect, process, analyse and disseminate data for official statistics.
An Accredited Statistician with the Statistical Society of Australia, he previously worked at Australian-headquartered management consultancy Nous Group. He has also held leadership roles at Stats NZ, New Zealand’s Social Investment Agency and Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, and the Australian aid program. He has master’s degrees in applied statistics and development studies.
He writes a personal blog, which these days often includes a Pacific angle, ‘Free Range Statistics’.
How I support stakeholders
- Engaging on overall strategic direction and prioritisation to meet member needs
- Advocating and liaising with donors, development partners and international stakeholders on Pacific statistics issues
- Helping statistical and data needs of members be understood and valued by the rest of SPC
- Providing overall technical leadership and direction for the division as well as promoting statistical excellence for the region
- Resolving stakeholder challenges, disagreements or concerns that could not be settled at working level
- Overseeing all recruitment, staff, consultancy and contractor issues.
