Samoa Food Away From Home (FAFH)
SPC in collaboration with the Samoa Bureau of Statistics conducted an experiment in Samoa on food away from home consumption using innovative approaches such as web search and crowd sourcing.
The aim of the experiment was twofold: i. to improve the current methodology used to estimate the dietary energy (calories) consumed away from home using information collected in a household income and expenditure survey (HIES); and ii. to propose an innovative protocol to better estimate away from home (AFH) food consumption.
Tuvalu Long Form Census
The Tuvalu Long Form Census (LFC) was an innovative initiative that aimed to combine two national household surveys – the Population and Housing Census (PHC) and the Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) – into one data collection exercise. The objective of the experiment was to test if an integrated data collection exercise was a suitable model to adopt in the context of the Small Island Developing States of the Pacific region. Specifically, the experiment aimed to test whether the data produced from the integrated survey would equate in terms of quality and usability to the data that would be collected by two stand-alone surveys, and whether there were cost advantages or other benefits gained via the integration of the two surveys.
