Data on fertility trends in PICTs are critical for addressing the current unmet need in family planning, and for improving maternal and neonatal health.

Vanuatu’s civil registration and vital statistics report presents the status of the civil registration and health information system of Vanuatu in regard to recording the occurrence and characteristics of live births, deaths and causes of death in the country.

While countries have multiple sources of demographic data, administrative data sources, and in particular civil registration systems are universally recognised for their fundamental function of providing governments with a continuous and permanent source of population data and statistics.

Over the last 2 weeks of September, 18 participants from six countries participated in a data analysis and report writing workshop in Noumea. The workshop organized by the Brisbane Accord Group (BAG) and led by the Pacific Community (SPC) with assistance from ESCAP and ABS also included a representative from the data use stream of the Data4Health project managed by Vital Strategies, who are also working with the Solomon Islands and PNG on their CRVS data.

The Brisbane Accord Group in collaboration with the United Nations Statistics Division convened a Regional Meeting on Civil Registration and Vital Statistics for the Pacific Islands, from 22 to 25 February 2016.
