During the ongoing 2020 round of Population and Housing Censuses there has been an increasing interest in using administrative data across Asia-Pacific. While some countries, such as Turkey and Korea, are continuing a transition begun in earlier census rounds, others, such as Indonesia, are exploring the use of administrative data in their census for the first time.

Population ageing is a megatrend in Asia and the Pacific, and it is rapidly increasing. In 2020, sixty per cent of the world’s older persons resided in the region, or some 630 million persons 60 years or over. By 2050, it is projected that one quarter of the population of Asia and the Pacific will be older, some 1.3 billion people.
